How is leverage margin calculated?

The result is calculated using the following formula:

Required Margin = Position Value / Leverage Approx Liquidation Move % = (1 / Leverage) − MMR%

Example Calculation

Documented INR book:

  1. 1. Account balance ₹50,000, position value ₹2,50,000 at 10x
  2. 2. Required margin = ₹2,50,000 / 10 = ₹25,000
  3. 3. Free margin remaining = ₹50,000 − ₹25,000 = ₹25,000
  4. 4. With 0.5% maintenance margin, approx. liquidation move = 10% − 0.5% = 9.5%

If free margin prints negative, the account cannot post this size at the chosen leverage.

Leverage lets you control a larger notional than the cash you post as margin. At 10x, ₹25,000 of margin supports a ₹2,50,000 position. Gains and losses both scale with that notional; the exchange can liquidate you if the move against you consumes maintenance margin.
