How is position size calculated?
The result is calculated using the following formula:
Position Size (units) = Risk Amount / |Entry − Stop Loss|
- Risk Amount = Balance × Risk% (or the flat risk amount you enter)
- Stop-Loss Distance = |Entry − Stop Loss|; Stop-Loss Distance % = Distance / Entry × 100
- Position Value = Position Size × Entry Price
- Required Margin = Position Value / Leverage — if this exceeds account balance, the size is not capped; a warning is shown instead
- Next: set the stop on the Stop Loss Calculator or check risk/reward.
Example Calculation
Preset example using round INR numbers (live LTP replaces entry when you pick a coin):
- 1. Account balance ₹1,00,000, risk 1% → risk amount ₹1,000
- 2. Long entry ₹50,000, stop-loss ₹49,000 → distance ₹1,000
- 3. Position size = ₹1,000 / ₹1,000 = 1 unit
- 4. Position value = 1 × ₹50,000 = ₹50,000; at 1x, required margin is ₹50,000
Switch to a 5x futures book and required margin drops to ₹10,000 — the stop still risks ₹1,000.
Frequently Asked Questions
View all →Many discretionary traders cap risk at 0.5–1% of account equity per idea so a streak of stops cannot erase a month of work. The right number is the one you can execute without moving the stop. This tool converts that percent into units; it does not tell you whether the setup is valid.
Position size is how many coins you hold. Leverage only changes how much margin that size locks. A 1 BTC long at 1x and at 10x have the same P&L per rupee of price move; the 10x book just uses one-tenth the cash and sits closer to liquidation. Size the stop first, then pick leverage that still leaves free margin.
Yes. Set leverage in Trade Details (1× is spot). Required margin is position value ÷ leverage. If that margin is larger than your account balance, the calculator still shows the risk-based size and warns instead of silently shrinking it. Pair this page with the liquidation calculator if you need the wipeout price.
A tiny stop inflates position size because the same rupee risk is divided by a small price distance. That can look efficient until noise tags the stop. If the distance is inside typical spread or candle range, widen the stop and re-size — do not keep the oversized quantity.
