How is break-even calculated?
The result is calculated using the following formula:
Break-even Sell = Buy Price × (1 + Buy Fee%) / (1 − Sell Fee%)
- Required Price Move = (Break-even Price − Buy Price) / Buy Price × 100
- Total Fees at Break-even = Buy Fee + Sell Fee at break-even
- Optional tax does not raise break-even because it applies only after a net gain
- Fee schedules: Binance, Bybit, KuCoin. Round-trip P&L: Profit Calculator.
Example Calculation
Buy at 100 with 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker, quantity 2:
- 1. Break-even = 100 × 1.001 / 0.999 ≈ 100.2002
- 2. Required move ≈ 0.2002%
- 3. Buy value = 200; sell value at BE ≈ 200.4004
- 4. Fees at break-even ≈ 0.4004
Until price clears that print, the trade is a fee donation even if the chart is green vs your buy.
Frequently Asked Questions
View all →You pay a fee to get in and another to get out. The sell must cover both, so break-even sits above the buy even if the coin never moved. At 0.10% / 0.10% that is a bit over 0.20% before you have earned a rupee.
Break-even Sell = Buy × (1 + Maker%) / (1 − Taker%). The denominator matters: a 0.10% taker is not subtracted after the fact, it is the slice the venue keeps of the sell proceeds. That is why 0.10 + 0.10 is slightly more than 0.20% of the buy.
Futures still pay maker/taker on notional, plus funding while you hold, plus a possible slippage gap. Leverage does not shrink the fee rate; it can make the fee a larger share of posted margin. Add funding on the funding calculator and slippage on the slippage calculator after this fee floor.
Maker orders, VIP tiers, and fee-token discounts (BNB, KCS) all cut the two percents in the formula. Run the same notional through the Binance, Bybit, and KuCoin fee calculators, then paste the cheaper rates back in here.
